PROSPECT — A 52-year-old man was shot with a small-caliber handgun by his 7-year-old neighbor at about 5:11 p.m. Friday, police said.

State police responded to the 13 Summit Road for the report of a man shot in the chest with a gun. Detectives from the Connecticut State Police Central District Major Crime Squad also responded.

The homeowner, Anthony Joseph Delucia, was shot once in the chest. He was transported to Saint Mary’s Hospital, where as of Sunday he was listed in stable condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Police said the shooting appears to be accidental. The weapon used was a small caliber handgun legally registered to Delucia.
Mayor Robert Chatfield, who is day commander of the volunteer fire department and also responded to the scene, said Delucia has been the town’s garbage man for about 10 years. Delucia is listed as an owner and operator of Joe’s Refuse Removal, at 16 Industrial Road.

“Joey is beloved by all in town because he is our town trash man,” Chatfield said.

State police said the investigation is ongoing.
