PROSPECT — Members of the Prospect Congregational Church Senior Youth Fellowship will see what life is like for the homeless during the group’s annual Homeless Awareness Sleepout this weekend.
Beginning Saturday at noon the group, about eight to 10 teenagers, will set up on the traffic island at the intersection of Route 68 and 69 in front of Town Hall. The group will stay there until noon on Sunday with nothing but a homemade tarp hut to sleep in and a fire to cook on, according to Rick Normand, youth fellowship advisor.
This will be the 13th year the group has conducted the sleepout in order to raise awareness for the homeless. During the sleepout, the group will be collecting donations as well as canned goods to donate to the local soup kitchen.
The donations will be divided between the Greater Waterbury Interfaith Ministries and Brass City Harvest, Normand said. Both organizations work to help the homeless.
