NAUGATUCK — The Zoning Commission will hold a public hearing Jan. 18 on a plan for a private high school on May Street.

The Yeshivas Ohr HaChaim, a Waterbury-based Jewish community, submitted plans for the private high school at 874 May St. in October. The plans include dorms and 86 housing units on the 56-acre property

The school will be connected with the New York City-based Touro College and University System.

The community is applying for a zone change from residential to a planned design district. The planned design district would allow the school and housing to be built on the same parcel.

Civil 1 Director of Engineering Brian Baker, who represents the Yeshivas Ohr HaChaim community, told the commission last week that the roads through the community will be private roads, which means the borough does not have to maintain them. He added besides the seven acres the school and dorm will sit on, the property will be taxed.

“They’ve been looking for a number of years for a piece of property to expand the community and this works out well. From the town’s standpoint they are good neighbors. There is a limited impact and there will be a net benefit from a tax standpoint,” Baker said.
