NAUGATUCK — Police responded to 22 Crestwood Drive at about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday for the report of two grenades, possibly live, found in an ammunition box.

The resident had been given the old ammunition box by a friend. When he opened it Wednesday, he found what he believed to be two live grenades, said Lt. Steven Hunt, a spokesman for Naugatuck Police Department.

Police set up a perimeter around the area, telling neighbors to stay in their homes in case the grenades exploded. The fire department was put on standby. But the grenades did not explode.

Naugatuck police contacted the Connecticut State Police Bomb Squad, which took custody of the two grenades and is conducting tests to determine whether they’re live.

Hunt said he believes that the gift-giver had honest intentions when giving the box to a friend.

“There’s nothing criminal to it,” Hunt said. “I guess some people just like to collect old military items.”
