NAUGATUCK — A day after the state medical examiner’s office ruled 58-year-old Krzysztof Wojcik’s died of natural causes, police said all signs point to nothing criminal occurring before his death.

“There is nothing that leads this department to believe there is any criminal aspect to this investigation,” Naugatuck police spokesman Lt. Robert Harrison said in a release issued Wednesday morning.

On Sunday afternoon, police found Wojcik dead in his apartment at 24 Golden Court.

Police forced their way into the home at about 12:20 p.m. Sunday, after a friend reported that Krzysztof Wojcik and his wife Danuta, 61, had not been heard from for a week. Krzysztof Wojcik was found dead in the bedroom, and Danuta Wojcik was found unconscious in the apartment. She was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital, where, as of this post, she was listed in critical condition.

She had fallen to the floor by her bed and lost consciousness after lying there for an extended period of time without help, police said Wednesday.

Danuta Wojcik had been bed-ridden for months and had trouble standing on her own, Harrison said.

The medical examiner’s office conducted an autopsy Tuesday on Krzysztof Wojcik’s body. According to the office, he died of a heart attack.

The autopsy revealed heart muscle disease, coronary artery disease and fatty liver disease, according to medical examiners. According to the office, no further tests will be done.

Although police believe nothing criminal occurred in this case, they are leaving the investigation open until they can speak with Danuta Wojcik.

Harrison said earlier this week that her condition improved slightly, but that she was still unable to speak with police. He didn’t know when she’d improve enough to be able to talk with police.

“Danuta appears to be the victim of unfortunate circumstances,” Harrison said in Wednesday’s release.
