NAUGATUCK — A one-car accident claimed the life of 29-year-old Thomas Matson of Prospect Tuesday night.

According to police, the accident occurred at about 12:15 a.m. near the former Peter Paul lot on New Haven Road between Warren Avenue and Osborn Road.

Police said Matson was driving a gray, four-door Pontiac Bonneville south when he veered off the road and the car struck a utility pole. Matson was the only person in the car, police said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Central Naugatuck Valley Regional Accident Reconstruction Unit.

A portion of the road was closed for hours following the crash as police investigated and utility crews worked to repair the damaged pole and downed wires. The road has been reopened to alternating traffic on one lane near Warren Avenue. It is expected that the road will be completely reopened to both lanes early this afternoon when utility crews finish replacing the damaged utility pole, police said.
