NAUGATUCK — An ordinary traffic stop turned out to not be so routine.

An Oakville man was arrested during the late hours this morning after hitting an officer with his car, leading police on a chase, and ramming another officer’s car before finally rolling his car over, police said.

Troy Enamit, 26, of 86D Falls Terrace, Oakville is now facing multiple charges in connection with the incident that began because he was not wearing a seat belt.

According to a release issued by the Naugatuck Police Department, borough officers were doing traffic enforcement at the exit 26 off ramp of Route 8 south at about 1:15 a.m. when Enamit, driving a grey Chevrolet Impala, was spotted not wearing his seat belt.

Enamit initially complied with officers’ signals to stop the release said.

Police said as Officer Colin McAllister was attempting to get Enamit’s information, he smelled alcohol on Enamit’s breath. Enamit suddenly accelerated catching McAllister’s arm in the door. He was knocked to the ground after the car struck him, police said.

McAllister strained a muscle in his arm as a result, according to police.

Officer Ian Kosky was also on the scene and began to purse Enamit, who fled onto Route 8 north. Police said Enamit got off exit 29 at the Waterbury town line and led Kosky on a chase through Waterbury roads to the dead end Dana Drive. Now stuck in the dead end, Enamit turned around in the cul-de-sac and began driving directly at Kosky’s cruiser, police said.

Kosky tried to get out of the way, but the two cars side-swiped each other, causing Enamit to lose control and roll his car, police said.

After crashing, Enamit tried to run from the scene but was caught by Kosky as he was climbing a fence. Police said Enamit resisted arrest and was tased. Enamit was taken into custody with the help of Waterbury officers.
Enamit was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital and treated and released, police said.

Enamit was charged with striking a police officer with a vehicle, driving under the influence, reckless driving, operating under suspension, and engaging an officer in pursuit. He was arraigned in Waterbury Superior Court Wednesday and bond was set at $50,000. He is due back in court on Sept. 12.
