NAUGATUCK — A Waterbury teenager was charged early last week with stealing a car left running in a parking lot in the borough.

According to police, on Dec. 30 at about 8:20 p.m. the 17-year-old stole a car from the parking lot of Rich’s Car Works at 27 South Main St. Lt. Bryan Cammarata, Naugatuck police spokesman, said the keys were in the car and the doors were unlocked.

The teenager and the car were found a few hours later in Waterbury, he said. When the teenager saw police approach he ran from the officers but was stopped a short time later, according to police.

The teenager was charged with larceny in the second degree, larceny in the fourth degree, operating without a license and interfering with an officer. The teen was scheduled to appear Dec. 31 in Waterbury Juvenile Court and taken to Bridgeport Juvenile Detention after the arrest.

Last year there was a rash of car thefts of vehicles left running and unattended in parking lots throughout the Naugatuck Valley and Greater Waterbury areas.

Cammarata said the theft last week was not connected with the thefts from last year, which he added have decreased.

“We don’t have any reason to believe it was connected,” he said.
