NAUGATUCK — A one-car crash overnight Saturday toppled a utility pole on Spring Street, closing the street near Mallane Lane.

Police said someone was driving a 2006 Kia Spectra north on Spring Street at about 1:50 a.m. when the car went off the road and crashed into a utility pole. The pole fell and brought live wires down across Spring Street.

Police said the driver fled and they are searching for the suspect.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area, and police have set up detours. The street is expected to be closed most of the weekend because utility crews are backed up in the wake of Tropical Storm Isaias.

Police ask anyone with information on the crash to call the Naugatuck Police Department at 203-729-5221 or the department’s confidential tip line at 203-720-1010.
