The number of power outages in Naugatuck is dwindling following a massive thunderstorm that ripped though the area.

Connecticut Light & Power reported that at about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday 1,276 Naugatuck customers are without power, down from 4,690 at about 5 p.m.

Naugatuck Mayor Robert Mezzo said CL&P crews are in town working on restoring the power. He was not expecting long outages.

As of this post, there 233 outages reported in Beacon Falls and 191 in Prospect, according to CL&P’s website.

Thousands of CL&P customers in Naugatuck lost power prior to the storm rolling through as a transformer caught fire on Cherry Street, Naugatuck Police Spokesman Lt. Robert Harrison said earlier this afternoon. Harrison referred further questions on the fire to the fire department. Fire officials could not be reached for comment Wednesday afternoon.

Prospect firefighters responded to a mobile home fire Wednesday afternoon at 155 Sills Ave.

Prospect Fire Chief Jason Kolodziej said when firefighters arrived at the trailer, the fire was visible underneath the trailer and through the living room window. Firefighters were able to make entry and extinguish the fire, he said.

The fire department received help from both Bethany and Cheshire fire departments, Kolodziej said. Bethany firefighters attended the scene of the fire while Cheshire firefighters covered the fire house.

Kolodziej said the home owner was not home at the time of the fire and no one was injured.

Also a young man was electrocuted on Dogwood Drive in Prospect while working on a sewer pump in Wednesday’s storm, fire officials said.

Both incidents in Prospect were the result of a lightning strike around 3 p.m. Wednesday, fire officials said.

The man who was electrocuted was expected to be discharged Thursday from Saint Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, officials said.

Prospect Mayor Robert Chatfield reported, as of Wednesday afternoon, Clark Hill Road was closed at 32 Clark Hill Road and Bronson Road was closed between Clark Hill Road and Arbor Meadow Drive.

Beacon Hose Company No. 1 spokesman Jeremy Rodorigo reported no major incidents in Beacon Falls. He said the fire department responded to one mutual aid call in a neighboring town.
