ProspectPolicePROSPECT — A New Britain man was killed in a one-car crash on Scott Road near the Waterbury line early Saturday, authorities said.

Wieslaw Pobidel, 55, of Sheffield Street, was taken by Campion Ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital in Waterbury, following the crash about 6:15 a.m., state police said in a release.

Pobidel was driving a 2002 Ford Van north on Scott Road when he veered off the road and struck a tree in the property of 160 Scott Road, state police said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Waterbury police and fire responded to the scene around 6:07 a.m.

Mayor Robert Chatfield, who responded as the fire department’s day commander, said when he arrived, the crew from Engine 5 in Waterbury was administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation to the driver.

The crash was discovered by Waterbury Police Capt. Edward Daponte on his way to work, authorities said.

According to Chatfield, Daponte noticed the van smoking and the wheels still spinning. He approached the van and saw that the driver was unconscious. He broke a window, climbed in and opened the door, he said.

“We thanked Waterbury for their assistance,” Chatfield said.
