Obituary: Oscar John Ransome

Dr. Oscar John Ransome, M.D., 75, a beloved husband, father, grandfather and pediatrician from Naugatuck, passed away December 23, 2018 in Homewood, Ala. He bravely fought brain cancer after being diagnosed in May 2017.

Oscar was born on Dec. 12, 1943 in Portchester, N.Y. to the late Oscar and Viola Ransome. He graduated from Port Chester High School in 1961, and later earned his bachelor and medical doctorate degrees from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He completed his internship and residency training at Waterbury Hospital, Yale New Haven, Newington Hospital, and Southbury Training School, and served as chief resident in pediatrics at Waterbury Hospital in 1971 and 1972. Oscar was in private practice in Naugatuck from 1972 to 2015, while also serving as an attending pediatrician for both St. Mary’s and Waterbury hospitals. After his diagnosis, he and his wife moved to Homewood, Ala. to be with family.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Heather Ransome, Homewood, Ala.; son, John Ransome, Fairfield; daughter, Angela Ransome-Harper, Cheshire; daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and Matthew Ford, Homewood Ala.; and sister, Patricia Smith, Naugatuck. He also leaves behind six grandchildren, Jane Ransome, Jack Ransome, Carson Lee Harper, Katie Harper, Dylan Ford and Jack Ford.

A reception honoring his memory and service to the Naugatuck community will be held on Jan. 5, 2019, at Jesse Camille’s Restaurant, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Naugatuck.
