NAUGATUCK — Joseph P. Oliveira, 81, the loving husband for 56 years of Mary (Moura) Oliveira, died peacefully on Monday, July 25, 2016 at Waterbury Hospital.

Mr. Oliveira was born on March 27, 1935 in Monte Murtosa, Portugal, a son of the late Jose and Virginia (Pinho) Oliveira. Joe had lived in Naugatuck since coming to the United States at the age of 12. He was a retired employee of the Chemical Division of Uniroyal, Inc. where he worked for 41 years and was a faithful parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church.

In addition to his wife Mary, Joe is survived by his daughters, Ann Daly and her husband Kevin J. Daly, Jr., and Debra Schmetterling and her husband Jack Schmetterling; his grandchildren, Caitlin Daly, Jessica Daly, David Schmetterling and Daniel Schmetterling; his brother, Elmar Oliveira and his wife Sandy Robbins and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his brother, John Oliveira.

Joe loved his home. He was an avid gardener and talented woodworker who was a master of Do-It-Yourself projects for his family. Joe enjoyed traveling, especially to the beach. Two of his favorite destinations were Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Ogunquit, Maine. As a young man, Joe was a semi-professional soccer player. He later continued his love of sports as a die-hard UConn basketball fan. Joe had a deep appreciation for music and art, and loved to sing and dance. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, July 28, 2016 at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church St., Naugatuck. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the Church. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery. Calling hours are Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, 82 Fairview Ave., Naugatuck.
