Obituary: John Lewis Hassenfeldt Jr.

NAUGATUCK — John Lewis Hassenfeldt, Jr., 77, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at Griffin Hospital, Derby. He was the husband of Grace (Fairchild) Hassenfeldt.

Mr. Hassenfeldt was born Feb. 5, 1938 in Waterbury, the son of the late John L. and Lillian (Kraft) Hassenfeldt Sr.

Mr. Hassenfeldt was a Firefighter for the Borough of Naugatuck and member of the Local 1219 until his retirement in 1984. After his retirement from the fire department, John worked for many years at the Town Hall in Naugatuck tending to various maintenance and custodial needs.

John enjoyed classic cars. He was a member of the Crankn’ Yanks Model-T Club of America, serving on the Board of Directors as well as the Westchester Model-A Club. In the most recent years, John was active delivering food for the Naugatuck Ecumenical Food Bank. He loved spending time with his family and watching the Yankees and UConn women.

Besides his wife of 34 years, John is survived by his children, Helen Van Kleeck, Robert Ford, Denise Dewling, Joe Hassenfeldt and Diane Eckert; his 11 grandchildren, James, Amanda and Heather Ford, Tyler Anne, Jake and Charlie Hassenfeldt, Rachel Dewling, John and Kathryn VanKleeck, and Kristen and Paul Duguay; his six great-grandchildren Devon, Bryson, Alexetta, Jayleh-Rae, Giavanna and Joey; his brother, Richard Hassenfeldt and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he is predeceased by his brother, Howard Hassenfeldt Sr.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 28, 2015 at 10 a.m. at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow St. Burial will follow in Grove Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
