WOODBURY — Helena S. “Hinky” (Magas) Alegi, beloved wife of John J. Alegi for 62 years, died peacefully on March 5, 2018 at St. Mary’s Hospital with loving family by her side.

Helena was born on Oct. 30, 1937 in Naugatuck, a daughter of the late Michael and Pauline (Yelega) Magas. She lived most of her life in Naugatuck and also lived in Waterbury and Woodbury. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury and worked as a medical assistant for various local physicians for many years. She enjoyed reading, crafting, gardening and was an avid UConn and New York Yankees fan. She was a devout Catholic and loving mother and grandmother.

In addition to her husband John, Helena is survived by her daughters, Joanne Phinney, Maryanne Cool (Rick), Nancy Beauchemin (Mark), and her son, John Alegi (Carol); her grandchildren, Jasper Beers, Kristi Selvaraj (Victor), Michael Beers, Kevin Beauchemin, Ricky Cool (Heather), Ryan Cool, Matthew Alegi and Christopher Alegi; her great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Selvaraj and Ian Cool; her brother, Raymond Magas; her sisters, Jane LeBlanc and Elaine Tedesco; her sisters-in-law, Carol Alegi and Eleanor Magas, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Helena was predeceased by her sister, Elizabeth Swiderski, and her brothers, Elmer, Edward, Leo and Michael Magas.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, March 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Naugatuck. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Naugatuck. Calling hours are Friday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Buckmiller Thurston Mengacci Funeral Home, Naugatuck.
