WATERBURY — Donald Vensel, 93, husband of Gertrude “Trudy” (Wick) Vensel, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017.

Mr. Vensel was born in Waterbury, son of the late Mortimer and Josephine (Daly) Vensel. A lifelong Waterbury resident, he graduated from Crosby High School. He attended the University of Connecticut where he met the love of his life Trudy. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage.

He graduated with a degree in business administration and was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. He retired from Starbuck Sprague Co. in Waterbury after many years of service.

Donald proudly served in the U.S. navy during World War II on LST 117 in the Solomon Islands, the Marianas, Okinawa, Marshall Islands, and Leyte Gulf. He was a member of the American Legion David S. Miles Post 174 in Oxford, and a lifetime member of the Woodbury/Southbury Rod and Gun Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and spending time with his family.

Besides his wife of 65 years, Donald is survived by his sons, Donald and his wife, Susan, and Carl and his wife, Vicky; his daughters, Anne Capozzi, and Linda Ligi; his ten grandchildren, Matthew, Sara, Justin, Ashley, Christina, Michael, Christian, Zachary, Christopher, and Ryan; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Christine Vensel; son-in-law, Chuck Capozzi; brothers, Frederick, Carl, Mortimer, Robert and Frank; and sisters, Doris O’Dea, Mildred Book, and Catherine Manke.

His funeral will be held on Monday, Jan. 30, 2017 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Waterbury. Burial with military honors will follow in All Saints Cemetery, Waterbury. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Naugatuck Valley Memorial/Fitzgerald-Zembruski Funeral Home, 240 North Main St., Naugatuck.
