Obituary: Benjamin A. Gentile Sr.


WATERFORD — Mr. Benjamin A. Gentile Sr., 84, of East Lyme, formerly of Prospect, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2016 at Greentree Manor, Waterford. He was the husband of the late Joyce (Gunderman) Gentile.

Mr. Gentile was born Aug. 6, 1932 in Bridgeport, son of the late Antonio and Maria (Colucci) Gentile. After retiring from Sikorsky Aircraft, he became a housing manager for the St. Vincent DePaul Mission in Waterbury. He was a communicant of St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church in Prospect, where he also served as an Eucharistic Minister and was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Father O’Dea Council. He was also very involved in other church activities, especially weekly Bingo. Ben’s family and friends often recognized his incredible work ethic as someone who did not work to live but “lived to work.”

Mr. Gentile is survived by two sons, Benjamin A. Gentile Jr. and his wife, Mary, of East Lyme, and David Gentile and his wife, Debra, of Wesley Chapel, Fla; a daughter-in-law, Colleen Gentile Brown and her husband, Tom, of Shelton; and four grandchildren, Christopher Gentile, Melissa Gentile, Michael Gentile, Emily Gentile; a sister, Louise (Gentile) Grannonio of Huntington, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Charles Gentile; his brothers, Fred and Joe Gentile; and his sister, Ann (Gentile) Waterman.

A funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church, 4 Union City Road, Prospect. Family and friends are asked to please meet directly at the church. There are no calling hours. The Prospect Memorial Funeral Home, 72 Waterbury Road, Prospect is in charge of arrangements.
