Historical Society offering $1,000 scholarship

PROSPECT – The Prospect Historical Society is inviting graduating high school seniors whether at Woodland Regional High School or home-schooled and are residents of Prospect to apply for a $1,000 scholarship.

Applicants must be attending an institution of higher learning in the fall of 2024. The application can be found on the following link, bit.ly/PHSctscholarship. The PHS in the link must be in capital letters.

The applications are due by the first Friday in May or on May 3. People who have any questions can email ctprospecthistoricalsociety@gmail.com.

Hazardous waste, paint collection April 27

PROSPECT – The Naugatuck Valley Council of Governments is holding a household hazardous waste and paint collection on Saturday, April 27 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ansonia Public Works located at 1 North Division St.

The collection is for residents from the following towns including Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethlehem, Derby, Middlebury, Naugatuck, Oxford, Prospect, Seymour, Southbury, Thomaston, Waterbury, Watertown, Wolcott and Woodbury.

The event is free of charge to residents however they will need to show a proof of residency which include a driver’s license, a tax bill or another identification.

People can bring up to 50 lbs. of residential waste per vehicle. Attendees are asked to stay in their vehicle at all times but are asked to first check if their town accepts materials.

Some of the things people can bring to dispose of are oil and latex-based paints and stains, thermometers and thermostats containing mercury, oven cleaners, pesticides and poisons, pool and photo chemicals, automotive cleaners and fluids and aerosol containers that contain a chemical. Some things people aren’t allowed to bring include tires, car batteries, propane tanks exceeding 1 lb., asbestos, smoke detectors, explosives, radioactive or medical waste and food-grade aerosol containers, spray paint and empty aerosols of any kind.

Sexual assault awareness vigil

NAUGATUCK – Jane Doe No More is holding a Sexual Assault Awareness Month Candlelight Vigil on Tuesday, April 30 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Naugatuck Green.

Attendees will light candles in solidarity with the survivors of sexual crimes. For more information, people can call 203-729-0245.

Land trust annual dinner

PROSPECT – The Prospect Land Trust annual dinner and meeting will be May 19 at 4 p.m. at the the Kitchen in Prospect Bar and Grill, 44 Waterbury Road.

The cost is $35 and includes a buffet dinner. The speaker will be Mark Kokinchak, an instructor at the New York Botanical Garden where he teaches insect identification and plant disease identification. Kokinchak will speak on the care of household garden and container plants.

There will also be a silent auction and the Land Trust is asking people to contribute items related to the outdoors to be auctioned. This could include nature books, artwork, framed photos, garden items, or decorative items. All proceeds go to the Prospect Land Trust Scholarship Fund.
