New special ed director in place

REGION 16 — The Region 16 school district announced that Lisa Colandro has been hired as the new director of special education and pupil personnel.

Colandro holds a sixth year professional diploma in educational leadership and a master’s degree in special education from Southern Connecticut State University, a press release stated. She is seeking an additional sixth year diploma in instructional coaching.

Colandro started her career as a special education teacher at Seymour High School, the release stated. She also previously worked as a special education coordinator for the state Department of Education; a district department head at Emmett O’Brien Technical High School in Ansonia; and principal at several schools within the Connecticut State School System.

While principal at Kaynor Technical High School in Waterbury the school was recognized as a Connecticut School of Distinction and gained national recognition as a USA News and World Report Bronze Medalist School, the release stated.

Colandro’s salary is $129,997, and the position is in the administrator’s union.

“The (Board of Education) feels her wide range of leadership skills are aligned to the core values and beliefs of Region 16,” the release stated.
