HAMDEN — Angie DeRosa and Gabrielle Wilson, two seniors at Naugatuck High School, participated in the Connecticut Health I-Team’s investigative journalism workshop at Quinnipiac University recently.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Lisa Chedekel and Lynne DeLucia co-founded the non-profit news organization in 2010 dedicated to producing in-depth stories on issues of health and safety. The two women decided to host summer camps for high school students interested in learning more about pursuing a career in investigative journalism.
“We help them to know what information they have access to,” Chedekel said in a news release. “We actually want to help them to produce stories that they can take home to their school newspapers.”
Veteran reporters from various news organizations spoke with the students about what documents they have the right to access. The students then had the opportunity to actually find and report stories to develop.
“I think it will open doors for people, maybe get them interested in the field of journalism,” said Naugatuck resident Kim Wilson, a Connecticut Health I-Team intern, in a news release. “This is getting kids exposed to journalism at a younger age.”
