NAUGATUCK — Borough police charged a Waterbury man Monday in connection with an armed robbery last week at the Subway restaurant at 1183 New Haven Road.
Kevin Savage, 25, was charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree unlawful restraint, first-degree reckless endangerment, sixth-degree larceny and criminal use of a firearm.
The charges stem from an Oct. 2 robbery.
Police responded to the Subway at about 6:20 p.m. on the report of an armed robbery. Employees reported that a man, believed to be Savage, entered the store with a handgun, which was later found to be a BB gun. Police reported Savage pressed the gun into a woman’s side, then stole about $270 from the register.
Savage took the employee’s cell phone, police said, and threw it against a window as he was leaving the store.
Nobody was injured during the incident, police said.
Savage is also the suspect in two other strong-arm robberies in the borough and police expecte to file more charges against him.
Police believe Savage stole two cartons of Newport cigarettes from the countertop at a DP Mart on New Haven Road hours before the Subway robbery.
Another robbery was carried out Oct. 1 at the G&A Variety store on Maple Street, where Savage is suspected of stealing two cartons of cigarettes from a counter after pushing two young bystanders out of the way.
Savage is also facing or expected to face a slew of charges in connection with a multi-town crime spree.
Savage’s crime spree appears to have started sometime last week at Rockwell’s Deli in Woodbury, where he is suspected of stealing a 2011 Audi A3.
That same car was spotted Oct. 2 during the robbery at the DP Mart in Naugatuck.
Savage is the suspect in three other robberies in the Greater Waterbury area — a holdup of a clerk at a Shell gas station on Straits Turnpike in Watertown Oct. 2, an attempted robbery Oct. 3 at the United Check Cashing store on Wolcott Street in Waterbury and an armed robbery Oct. 3 at the United Bank in Cheshire.
Waterbury police first arrested Savage Oct. 3 at 443 Highland Ave. in Waterbury. At the time, Savage was on parole for violating a probation that stemmed from a larceny conviction. He was arraigned Monday at Waterbury Superior Court and held on bond.
