NAUGATUCK-Ever wonder what it’s like to be a police officer? The Naugatuck Police Department can help.

The department is now accepting applications for the 2011 Citizens Police Academy. The academy is a 10-week program that provides borough residents with a first-hand overview of the law enforcement and community related functions of the police department.

The program will instruct people on such law enforcement topics as accident, narcotic and criminal investigations, police canines, the patrol and detective divisions, crime scenes, and more.

The academy is scheduled to begin Monday, March 28 and will meet weekly from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the police department.

The academy is free and open to Naugatuck residents 20 years old and older. The program is limited to 24 people, and qualified applicants will be subject to a lottery drawing to determine the final roster.

Applications can be picked up at the front desk in the Naugatuck Police Department, 211 Spring St.

Applicants must return a completed application and a photocopy of their driver’s license into the police department no later than Monday, March 14 to be considered for the academy. Criminal background checks will be done on all applicants.

Questions should be directed to session coordinator Capt. Jerry Scully at (203) 720-7280.
