Naugatuck police responded to a two-car head-on motor vehicle accident at about 8:30 p.m. in the area of Prospect Street. Witnesses at the scene reported that one of the drivers fled the scene and jumped from the Prospect Street Bridge. He was hit on Route 8, according to a Naugatuck police news release.

Connecticut State Police from Troop I in Bethany also responded at about 8:34 p.m. to Route 8 south between Exits 28 and 29 for a person in the roadway. Anthony Meier, 24, of Prospect, was found in the right southbound lane with injuries consistent with being hit by a motor vehicle.

Through an investigation it was determined he was hit by two cars, state police said. He was pronounced dead on the scene, according to a state police news release.

Borough police were expected to notify the family, according to a news release from that department.

“For unknown reasons the victim fell from the overpass onto the Route 8 southbound lanes of travel,” the state police release stated.

Prospect Street as well as both the north and southbound travel lanes were closed Saturday night while state police and the Naugatuck Police Accident Reconstruction Team investigated.

No other injuries were reported from Route 8, according to state police.
