NAUGATUCK — In a world where telecommunication continues to grow, many borough residents and business owners will now have the opportunity for a more reliable internet connection through fiber internet.

GoNetspeed, a fiber internet service provider in the Northeast region, has completed a $4.5 million investment of its 100 percent fiber optic network in Naugatuck. Workers began the construction in August and completed it in November. The work covers almost 66.5 miles and offers service to more than 8,189 homes and business, according to the company’s press release.

“We’re so excited to announce the completion of our new fiber optic network and bring reliable, high-speed internet to Naugatuck,” GoNetspeed senior vice president of network operations and general manager of Connecticut, Tom Perrone said in the press release. “The GoNetspeed team recognizes the importance of connection in today’s increasingly digital world. That’s why we’re committed to expanding access to fiber internet service for communities like Naugatuck to utilize at home and work.”

The company states in the release that fiber internet offers balanced speeds, which means that both download and upload speeds are equally fast.

GoNetSpeed director of marketing and community engagement Ashley Gustafson said the company would be the first fiber provider in the borough. The work in the borough included hanging fiber optic cables on telephone poles, she added.

Gustafson said the fiber optic cables provide more bandwidth and gives residents and businesses the ultimate experience.

“It’s more reliable,” Gustafson said. “You’re not sharing a connection.”

The company serves residential and business customers in other states including Alabama, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont and West Virginia, according to the press release.

Gustafson said the completed work was currently only for high-speed fiber internet connection. Phone service will be coming in 2023.

“GoNetspeed is working hard to build new networks and bring gigabit fiber internet to more communities than ever before,” GoNetspeed CEO Richard Clark said in the press release. “We look forward to delivering more access to fiber internet, better speeds and reliability, and unparalleled customer service in the Northeast U.S.”
