NAUGATUCK — The Zoning Commission approved a zone change last week for the property where the Crystal Room is at 98 School St.

The property will change from a R-15 designation to a designation of B-1.

Edgar DeCampos, who is the principal of Crystal Room LLC, requested the change so that he could build a non-denominational wedding chapel on the property. The Crystal Room is a wedding venue and DeCampos previously said having a chapel on site would help increase his business.

Chapels aren’t allowed under the R-15 designation, which is a residential designation. Under the designation of B-1, which is a business designation, DeCampos is allowed to seek a special permit to build the chapel on the property.

DeCampos must bring plans for a chapel to the commission and apply for the special permit.

Neighbors raised concerns about the change during public hearings on the proposal. Many of them said they were OK with a chapel being built, but they were worried about what would happen on the property if the Crystal Room went out of business. Residents expressed concerns about the venue becoming a restaurant that would draw more people on a constant basis and lead to an increase in traffic on the dead-end street.
