NAUGATUCK — The Democratic Town Committee on Sept. 15 endorsed Shagufta Zahid to run for burgess in the November election in the place of Deputy Mayor Laurie Taf Jackson.

Jackson, 56, withdrew from the race in August due to personal reasons and family obligations. She is in her fifth term on the Board of Mayor and Burgesses, and served as deputy mayor the last two terms.

Zahid, 54, told the roughly two dozen committee members that attended the special meeting Sept. 15 at Town Hall that she’s humbled and honored to receive their support to run. Zahid said she never thought in a million years that she, an immigrant from Pakistan, would be in a position to run for office.

“I think the reason I’m here today standing right now is because of these people,” said Zahid, referring to the committee members.

Zahid, who is married with three children, is a real estate broker and owner of S Factor Realty Group. She has served on the Naugatuck Conservation Commission for about six years.

Burgess Carl Herb nominated Zahid to fill the vacancy. He said he’s known Zahid for six years, and she represents hard work, family and charity.

“I can only give the highest possible recommendation,” Herb said. “If I can influence anybody, please support her.”

There are nine burgess seats on the Board of Mayor and Burgesses, and one party can hold up to six of them. With the endorsement of Zahid, Democrats and Republicans once again have a full slate of six burgess candidates on their respective tickets.
