HARTFORD — About 250 family and friends gathered Nov. 5 at the William A. O’Neill Armory in Hartford to say good-bye to about 80 soldiers from the 142nd Medical Company of Naugatuck.

The company is being deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, said Col. John Whitford, director of communications for the Connecticut National Guard.

It is the unit’s first deployment in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, but it was deployed in support of Operation Desert Storm in 1991, according to a release.

The company left Sunday for Fort Lewis, Wash., for training and validation. When validated, the company will go to Afghanistan, where it will provide medical evacuation and operate Troop Medical Clinics, according to the release.
Whitford said several soldiers from the company hail from area towns, including Beacon Falls, Naugatuck, and Prospect.
