NAMI offers program for families of mentally ill

NAUGATUCK — The National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) is offering a free program to help family members and friends of individuals who have a mental illness.

The Family-To-Family Educational Program is a free 12-week course that offers information that can help family members understand and support their ill relative and learn how to better maintain their own well being. Course topics include learning about communication skills; medication review; empathy workshop; biology of the brain and current research; problem solving; diagnosis and dealing with critical periods; available rehabilitation services; advocacy and fighting stigma.

Preregistration is required. Classes start at 7 p.m. on Feb. 2 in Naugatuck. For more information and to register, call Terrilynn at (203) 881-2707.
