NAMI offering course for family, friends of mentally ill

National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) is hosting a program for loved ones of people who have a mental illness.

The Family-To-Family Educational Program is a free 12-week course for family members and friends of individuals who have a mental illness. The program offers information that can help family members understand and support their ill relative and learn how to better maintain their own well being.

The course topics include, learning about communication skills, medication review, empathy workshop, biology of the brain and current research, problem solving, diagnosis and dealing with critical periods, available rehabilitation services, and advocacy and fighting stigma.

Pre-registration is required. The classes will start at 7 p.m. on Feb. 21 in Seymour. For more information or to register, call Terrilynn at (203) 881-2707.
