NAUGATUCK — A one-car accident on Rubber Avenue knocked out power to more than 2,200 customers in the borough and forced Naugatuck High School to dismiss early Wednesday.

Lt. Bryan Cammarata of the Naugatuck Police Department said a man was driving a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis west on Rubber Avenue when he hit a utility pole across the street from the high school at about 11:30 a.m. The driver, who was the only occupant in the vehicle, told police he swerved to avoid a construction truck that had pulled out of the high school’s driveway, Cammarata said.

Cammarata said the driver did not suffer any major injuries.

The utility pole snapped causing a power outage to as many as 2,208 Connecticut Light and Power customers, or 15 percent, in Naugatuck, according to CL&P. Power was restored as of 2 p.m. according to CL&P’s outage map.

Naugatuck High School was dismissed early at 1:15 p.m. due to the power outage.

As of 4 p.m., Cammarata said crews were still on the scene repairing the pole. He said Rubber Avenue is open in both directions and the pole should be fixed by Wednesday evening.
