Medical emergency caused woman’s crash into church

NAUGATUCK — A 53-year-old borough woman was hospitalized after crashing into St. Paul’s Lutheran Church yesterday afternoon.

Naugatuck police spokesman Lt. Robert Harrison said Janice Smith of North Hoadley Street was driving a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo on Millville Avenue around 1:30 p.m. when she suffered a medical emergency. The type of emergceny was not disclosed.

Smith veered across the road, over a lawn, and crashed into the church at Millville Avenue and North Hoadley Street, he said.

Smith was transported by ambulance to Waterbury Hospital. Her condition was unknown as of this post.

Yesterday, Fire Chief Ken Hanks said Smith did not appear to have suffered any critical injuries.

The crash caused minor damage to the church and the Rodeo had to be towed from the scene.
