Marilyn Stapleton

NAUGATUCK – Marilyn Diane (Mezzo) Stapleton, 88, of Naugatuck, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, on Jan. 24, 2024.

Marilyn was born on Nov. 21, 1935, in Waterbury, the oldest daughter of the late Joseph Mezzo and Mary (Smiecinski) Mezzo of Naugatuck. She attended local schools and later met and married Merle Stapleton from Cranks Creek, Ky. They settled in Naugatuck/Beacon Falls where they raised five children.

Marilyn was a retired caregiver from Southbury Training School, where she formed lasting friendships in and out of work. Above all she was a wonderful mother, putting her children first, and a loving big sister to her four siblings.

She enjoyed family vacations, trips to Cape Cod and Florida, monthly sisters’ luncheons, and crossword puzzles. She cherished family gatherings and was sure to make Halloween and Christmas parties extra special.

Marilyn is survived by her five children, Susan Mahoney and her husband Michael, of Prospect, Diana Johnson and her husband Pete, of Wells, Vt., Joseph Stapleton and his wife Janice, of Naugatuck, Gary Stapleton and his wife Dorothy, of Wolcott, and Nancy Sawyer and her husband Steve, of Beacon Falls.

She also leaves behind her 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and her four sisters, Christine, Elaine, Janice and Judy.

All services were to be private and at the discretion of the family.
