NAUGATUCK — An 18-year-old Middlebury man was arrested early Saturday morning after he was pulled over driving a stolen school bus, police said.

At about 2 a.m. Sgt. Peter Bosco spotted a school bus near North Church Street and Bridge Street without its headlights on, according to police. Bosco pulled over the bus and began questioning the driver, Kevin Monagan, of 51 Pinehollow Drive, Middlebury, as to how he got the bus.

Monagan first told Bosco that the NAPA auto parts store, which is next to the Student Transportation of America bus lot off of Hotchkiss Street, gave him the bus, police said. Upon further questioning, Monagan eventually admitted he broke into the bus and drove off with it after finding the keys, according to police.

Police said the bus Monagan was driving, along with others in the lot, had been vandalized as well.

Monagan was charged with first-degree larceny, first-degree criminal attempt at larceny, second degree criminal trover, second degree criminal mischief, third-degree criminal trespassing and several motor vehicle violations.

He was held on a $25,000 surety bond and scheduled to arraigned Monday in Waterbury Superior Court.
