NAUGATUCK — Maine Oxy’s newest facility in the borough is hoping to spark some good business as well as an interest in welding.

Maine Oxy, which is based out of Auburn, Maine, celebrated the opening of its location at 11 Rado Drive in the Naugatuck Industrial Park June 20.

Maine Oxy is a supplier of specialty gases, welding supplies and safety equipment throughout New England.

The celebration included vendors, demonstrations of safety procedures and a ceremonial ribbon cutting. The ribbon was made of metal and cut by Naugatuck Mayor Robert Mezzo with a welding torch.

Carl Paine, who is part of Maine Oxy’s business development, said the facility in Naugatuck will be the company’s only filling station besides the facility in Auburn.

Currently the company has 15 facilities across five states, with three in Connecticut.

Local and state dignitaries, as well as representatives of the Naugatuck Chamber of Commerce, spoke at the event and welcomed Maine Oxy to the borough.

“Maine Oxy, you’re coming to a great family of companies here within this industrial park. This industrial park has served this community well over many years and now you are the next member of its family,” Mezzo said.

Ninth-grade students from Emmett O’Brien Vocational Technical School were also at the event, learning welding skills and welding safety.

The students were able to try out their skills in the company’s mobile welding training center; a large van that had individual welding booths to help students learn the trade. According to Paine, this is the only vehicle of its type in New England.
