Voters across the state headed to the polls Tuesday for primary elections.
Locally, the only candidates on the ballot were U.S. Senate hopefuls seeking the chance to run for the soon-to-be vacated seat of U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.)
On the Republican side, former wrestling executive Linda McMahon and former Congressman Christopher Shays faced off. Democrats chose between former U.S. Representative Christopher Murphy and former Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz.
McMahon and Murphy prevailed.
According to ThePoliticalGuide.com, 253,695 votes were cast statewide, with 138,604 of them being cast by Democrats and 115,091 being cast by Republicans. McMahon received 73 percent of the Republican votes for a total of 83,684 and Shays received 27 percent of the Republican votes for a total of 31,407. Bysiewicz received 33 percent of the Democratic votes for a total of 45,098 and Murphy received 67 percent of the Democratic votes for a total of 93,506.
The Republican voters in Beacon Falls, Naugatuck, and Prospect voted the same as most of the state, favoring McMahon over Shays.
Democrat voters in Naugatuck and Beacon Falls favored Bysiewicz over Murphy. In Prospect, Murphy beat Bysiewicz by six votes.
In Beacon Falls 408 residents turned out to vote. McMahon received 192 votes, Shays received 29 votes, Bysiewicz received 117 votes, and Murphy received 70 votes.
In Naugatuck 1,399 residents turned out to vote. McMahon received 656 votes, Shays received 77 votes, Bysiewicz received 385 votes, and Murphy received 281 votes.
In Prospect 717 residents turned out to vote. McMahon received 468 votes, Shays received 46 votes, Bysiewicz received 107 votes, and Murphy received 113 votes.
