She attended Wagner College in Staten Island fulfilling requirements for a Fine Arts degree. She completed graduate work in Art Education at Southern Connecticut State University. In addition, Petrochko is certified in botanical and natural science illustration by the New York Botanical Garden.

Petrochko has received numerous awards for her illustrations. She has been recognized by the Smithsonian Institution and the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences, as well as the Institute of Children’s Literature, Gordon Fraser Publications, the Courage Art Center and Fairfield Woman Magazine.

Petrochko currently teaches and conducts drawing and painting work- shops in nature centers, schools and museums.

Petrochko is very interested in birds, including their habitats and anatomical structure. She is “intrigued with the intricacies of colors and patterns of birds, plants and organic forms occurring in nature,” all of which have “led her to create detailed studies,
both representational and abstract.”
