Liberty Bank issued a warning Monday morning that it has identified a phishing scam directed at its customers.
The scam targets customers by sending them an email that appears to be from Liberty Bank informing them they have successfully sent a bill payment. The email asks customers to log in to “dispute and recover your money ASAP,” which in reality gives the scammers access to account information.
“If you receive an email asking you to click a link to verify a payment, or any communication asking you to click a link to log in to your online banking tools, please delete it immediately,” a press release issued by Liberty Bank stated.
According to the Federal Trade Commission a phishing scam is a scam that presents consumers with a seemingly legitimate email or pop-up prompting them to share personal information.
The safest way for customers to log in to their online banking services is to go to the Liberty Bank website and use the log in box in the upper right corner, the release stated.
Customers who believe they may have fallen victim to the scam should call Liberty Bank immediately at 888-570-0773.
The Middletown-based Liberty Bank merged with the former Naugatuck Valley Savings and Loan, which was then dissolved into Liberty Bank. The bank has branches in Beacon Falls and Naugatuck.
