Letter: Town should look into assessment of properties

To the editor,

As a result of the last property revaluation in Beacon Falls, I will be seeing a substantial increase in the amount of the property taxes I will be required to pay. This led me to spend several hours at the Town Hall searching through property and tax records. I discovered the following facts.

In one section of town, 24 residents saw the assessed value of their property decrease by an average of $21,782. One resident saw his assessment decrease by $52,210. As a result he will see an estimated decrease of about $700 when he pays his tax bill. His neighbors will pay an average of $380 in additional taxes. Not a single resident in this section of town saw an increase in his assessment.

Meanwhile in another comparable section of town, with respect to home appearance, 11 residents saw the assessed value of their property increase by an average of $17,259. One resident saw his assessment increase by $36,220. These residents will be paying an average of $1,612 in additional taxes.

Something just doesn’t seem equitable and fair in Beacon Falls when it comes to sharing the property tax burden. I think there should be an investigation into how properties were assessed in Beacon Falls.
