Letter: Reader responds to letter on golf course

To the editor,

I’m very sorry to read George Sirois’ letter about how dismayed he is. I wonder if he knows how dismayed the low-income citizens in town are knowing that some of their taxes are going toward paying for the higher-income citizens’ hobby.

If there are so many players on any given day (he states around 100) please tell us why the course doesn’t make a profit, instead of being in the red every year.

There are many beautiful golf courses in Connecticut. Many of them close by, like Western Hills, Watertown Country Club and Farmingbury Hills. I know — I play them all.

Mary Davis has a good idea. Let the voters decide what they want their taxes to pay for. It would have been nice if the voters decided and had the chance to vote on paying and keeping the dedicated VNA.

It’s about time our so called leaders stop taking advice from big organizations from out of town. They don’t know what is good four our once quaint little town.

  1. Pat, just a question as both a golfer and as the Head Professional at Hop Brook, why not support your hometown course? Before people continue to criticize the money situation there, let me tell you that this past year was my first full fiscal year there. And I see the figures from the fiscal year, and we are developing a plan to help off set this so called deficit. All I ask for is some time to help fix these figures. I can not control what happened in the past, but with myself, as a PGA Professional and a leader in the Connecticut Section of the PGA of America, I am determined to turn the thought that Hop Brook doesn’t make money. Bottom line, we lose Hop Brook, there is NOTHING left in town for all ages to enjoy that can be played for a lifetime, and the uptaking of the fields would suffer tremendously as the money brought in helps take care of the ball fields. So before people want to close the course- do we really want to lose all the money brought in to help other fields in town?? Bringing something in is better than nothing. I will get the problem fixed with my boss. I just hope that you, and EVERY non believing citizen of Naugatuck, will just please be patient and give me the chance. One year isn’t enough time, but I will fix it and get the job done.
