Letter: Legislators speak for the majority

To the editor,

This in in response to the letter “Senators should stop bashing Trump, do job” (Citizen’s News, Feb. 9, 2018).

I write our elected representatives probably twice a month, especially lately. I have always received a response back from their office explaining in detail how they feel on the subject they were written on. And, I’m always afforded the opportunity to rebut their position simply by writing them back.

I have nothing but good things to say about U.S. Senators Christopher Murphy, D-Conn., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., and U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-3. I say that because I write them a lot and very often they are in agreement with what I write about.

What I write about is our sitting president. Forgive me, but I’m not a big fan of his.

I’m actually paying attention to it all. Not that President Trump’s supporters aren’t, just maybe not to the same extent that I am. For instance, I find that President Trump rarely does his job. He has spent multi millions of dollars (our tax money) on numerous golf vacations in just a 13-month period. It should be noted President Trump regularly criticized former President Barack Obama for the amount of time he spent golfing.

Our president fibs a lot. Doesn’t he? Politfact.com and other fact checking sites have him either being wrong or not telling the truth about something many, many times. I wonder why a lot of people, count me as one, don’t trust what this guy is saying?

The released House Intelligence classified memo, which was crafted by Republicans only, has almost been reduced to a bad joke. Trump says it absolves him and members of his own party say it doesn’t.

Many government agencies believe that Russia either attempted to or actually may have affected the election. Why isn’t this something everyone should want investigated to the utmost? I know, as an American, that’s what I want. So, why are people trying to stop the Muller investigation? Robert Mueller is a Republican. This isn’t partisan. Why wouldn’t we want to know if they hacked the election? And, if an American or Americans helped, shouldn’t those people be charged and tried? I would want that.

And, as far as the many people that are here illegally, most of them are not people that snuck in, just people that overstayed their visas. Most of them pay taxes on their earnings and pay into Social Security but will never be able to collect any of that money. It would seem that we are getting a benefit, rather than a detriment.

The sanctuary cities don’t bother me. Most of those people are trying to escape either famine or war. Shouldn’t we help those that are helpless?

Much from the Right has been said that sanctuary cities breed crime. But there is little factual evidence to back those claims.

FactCheck.org sites a study from researchers at the University of California, Riverside, and Highline College that states, “We find no statistically discernible difference in violent crime rate, rape, or property crime across the cities. Our findings provide evidence that sanctuary policies have no effect on crime rates, despite narratives to the contrary.”

All of our legislators were all elected by the majority. So, they already are speaking for the majority.

My request to legislators is to continue to speak for the majority. When the president doesn’t tell the truth, then stand up to him and hold him accountable. When the president does something wrong or embarrasses the nation and its people, call him out on it. In short, legislators should continue to do what the majority of people in Connecticut sent them there to do. Their job.
