BEACON FALLS — First responders and a hiker rescued an injured woman who fell while hiking Saturday afternoon in the Naugatuck State Forest.

Fire officials said the woman was hiking with her dog on a trial when she slipped and broke her ankle. A man who was also hiking came across the woman and called 911.

Crews responded to the forest at about 2 p.m. Northwest Connecticut Public Safety Communication Center triangulated the cell signal from the 911 call and provided firefighters with a map that showed the location of the hikers. The map and information from the hikers on their whereabouts helped crews reach the woman in about 20 minutes, officials said.

Crews used Beacon Hose Co. No. 1’s utility terrain vehicle to reach the woman, who was taken to Waterbury Hospital for treatment. A family member came to the scene to pick up the dog.

Beacon Hose, Naugatuck Fire Department and Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Environmental Conservation Police responded to the scene.

Officials urged people to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, stay on established trails, carry a cellphone and water, and hike with partners when hiking.
