NAUGATUCK — A short walk through the borough will go a long ways overseas.

The Congregational Church of Naugatuck’s annual CROP Walk will take place at 12 p.m. Sunday on the Town Green.

Stacey Cypher, a deacon with the church, said the walk is to raise awareness of hunger issues in other countries.

“Sometimes we think we have it so hard and we’re not seeing these women who have to walk a mile each way to get a bucket of water for their family,” Cypher said. “We do this walk as an act of solidarity to recognize they have to walk for things we have so close at hand.”

Participants can either walk a shorter walk around the downtown or a longer 1.5 mile walk, Cypher said.

It is free to participate in the walk but donations will be accepted, Cypher said.

CROP walks take place throughout the year all across the nation as part of the Church World Service. The walks not only benefit people in other countries but residents of the communities that the walks take place in.

Cypher said that a portion of the money will go to help the Naugatuck Ecumenical Food Bank.

The rest of the money will be used to help communities around the globe.

“This money to help globally will help give people water. It will give people a flock of chicks that they can raise for eggs and meat,” Cypher said.

Cypher said that those who can not participate in the walk can still donate by mailing checks to Congregational Church, 9 Division St., Naugatuck, CT 06770. All checks must be made out to CWS/CROP.
