NAUGATUCK — The Parks Commission last week voted in favor of returning the basketball hoops to the Joseph Healy Recreation Area next to Salem School.
The hoops were originally removed about five years ago due to players using foul language during school hours and events on the Green, as well as vandalism issues.
Parks Commission Chairman Jay Kuczenski brought the issue before the Board of Mayor and Burgesses on March 4, asking for the board’s guidance.
The board said the final decision would be up to the commission, but recommended placing a cap on the basketball hoops during school hours and while events were taking place on the Green. This would allow the borough to control when people played on the court.
The board also suggested the rules be stated clearly on a sign and if the hoops are vandalized or destroyed they should not be replaced.
Kuczenski said in an email the commission decided to replace the hoops with restrictions that are being drafted.
Parks and Recreation Director Kim Eyre said the hoops have been ordered. They will not be put up until the weather warms up enough so a crew can dig through the asphalt to put in the new poles, she said.
