NAUGATUCK — The High Rock Shooting Association of Naugatuck recently donated $1,500 to the Fisher House Foundation.

“We are a non-profit organization,” HRSA President Ray Hanley said. “The HRSA members vote on what charity we will support and the work of Fisher House certainly merits our support.”

The Fisher House Foundation builds and maintains long-term residential facilities near military hospitals nationwide to provide the families of seriously injured soldiers a place to stay during the long rehabilitation process. This need is not covered by any other resource.

Hanley and HRSA Vice President Ken Heidkamp recently presented the $1,500 check to Kevin Creed, chairman of the Friends of Fisher House in Connecticut.

The money donated was raised from the association’s 2nd annual Women on Target event held in May.

“We have been making contributions throughout the community and the state of Connecticut for the past 15 years,” Hanley said. “It’s been about eight years now that we have been able to generate substantial funds through some of our events like Women on Target and donate it to a worthy cause.”

Women on Target is a two-day, instructional clinic to teach women how to shoot pistols and rifles. HRSA held its first Women on Target event last year, raising $1,800 dollars, which was donated to the Susan Komen Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation.

“Based on our past success we are looking forward to hosting our 3rd annual Woman on Target next year, as well,” Hanley said.

Currently there are 54 Fisher Houses nationwide. The Bristol-based law firm of Newman Creed & Associates is planning to help raise $3 million for the construction of a Fisher House on the campus of the VA Hospital in West Haven. Once that goal has been met, the Fisher House Foundation will match those funds for a total of $6 million to complete the project.

The High Rock Shooting Association will be hosting a shoot on Aug. 18 to raise money for the members of the West Haven veterans’ hospital. Hanley said the Colonial Tavern in Oxford has generously donated their facility to hold a clam bake cookout for the veterans at no charge as well.
