Group seeking donations to help homeless

A Naugatuck native has team up with local businesses to help feed the homeless.

Allyson Genovese, who grew up in Naugatuck and now lives in Southington, is part of the Feeding the Homeless group. Last September, the group began collecting food for an area homeless shelter and have been cooking and/or dropping food off weekly ever since. Last Thanksgiving and Christmas the group cooked four dinners and served them to those in need, according to Genovese. The group also collected over 200 toys which were donated to those less fortunate. Throughout the year, the group collects donations from area residents to keep the giving going.

This year the group has partnered with area businesses as drop off locations for donations. The businesses collecting donations are: Ferrari’s Appliance, 160 Rubber Ave., Naugatuck; Moe’s Auto Sales & Service, 850 Rubber Ave. Ext., Naugatuck; Apple Automotive, 856 North Colony Road, Wallingford; Hop Brook Golf Course, 615 Church St., Naugatuck; Cut Loose Hair Studio, 1064 Farmington Ave., Berlin.

The group is accepting nonperishable food donations at all locations, in addition to foil, trays, hats, gloves, scarves and unopened, unwrapped toys. In addition, Moe’s Auto Sales & Service is accepting frozen food donations, such as hams and turkeys.

The group is also accepting donations of gift cards to Dollar Tree, Stop & Shop or Big Y, as well as monetary donations at
