NAUGATUCK — The borough will honor a husband and wife who have given back to the borough.

Ethel and Bernie Grant are the recipients of the 2018 Franklin Johnson Sr. Citizenship Award. They will be honored March 29 during the annual Mayor’s Breakfast at Jesse Camille’s Restaurant.

“We are very surprised and very humbled,” Ethel Grant said of receiving the award. “Everybody does their part. Our part is a small part, but it is nice to be recognized. We did not expect it.”

The award is named for Franklin Johnson, Sr., a former guidance counselor at Naugatuck High School.

The award was created to honor somebody who has served the borough over the years.

The Grants have lived in Naugatuck for 42 years.

Bernie Grant is known for his volunteer work helping the elderly and low-income families prepare their taxes each year.

The work is not just at tax time because, if there is any problem throughout the year, he works with both the Internal Revenue Service and individuals, Ethel Grant said.

Ethel Grant is currently the vice chairman of the Board of Education and the vice chairman of the Area Cooperative Educational Services’ governing board.

Ethel Grant also works with the Naugatuck United Methodist Church, where she is a parishioner, to put on the annual veteran’s appreciation service and meal, volunteers with the Naugatuck Youth Services, and is the chairman of the Naugatuck Back-to-School Block Party.

The annual Mayor’s Breakfast starts at 8:30 a.m. and tickets are $30. For more information or tickets, contact Janice Dambowsky at 203-720-7010 or at JDambowsky@naugatuck-ct.gov
