PROSPECT — Prospect resident and leukemia survivor Tina Sierra is hoping people will tee off for a good cause.

The annual Ben Falcone Memorial Tournament will take place July 24 at the Woodhaven Country Club at 275 Miller Road in Bethany. All the proceeds will benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Sierra, who owns the golf course along with her family, said the tournament has raised tens of thousands of dollars for the society.

The tournament was named in honor of her late father, Ben Falcone, who built the golf course. Falcone passed away in 2000 and the tournament began in 2001.

Sierra was diagnosed with leukemia in 2002. She participated in a clinical trial for a new cancer drug, Gleevec, which helps patients like her stay in complete remission.

“Thanks to research I was able to get on this medicine. I am really passionate about raising money for the leukemia society,” Sierra said.

The entry fee for the tournament is $30 and the green fees are $38. Players are able to rent a golf cart for $17.

The tournament includes a continental breakfast, dinner and prizes. Those interested in participating can call the club at 203-393-3230 to reserve a tee time.

Sierra is hoping for a large turnout this year because the course is currently for sale and the future of the tournament is unknown.

“More than ever I want this one to be really huge,” Sierra said. “It’s fun. It’s for a great cause. My goal is to sell it out this year.”
