REGION 16 — Arnold Frank has officially retired from his post as principal of Woodland Regional High School in Beacon Falls, but he may still oversee one more opening day for the Region 16 school.

The Board of Education, at its June 26 meeting, hired Frank as interim principal until his successor is in place.

Superintendent of Schools Tim James said Frank’s salary as interim was still being worked out, but it’s likely he will be paid on a per diem basis using the salary he made this past school year. Frank was paid $138,306 under the 2012-13 budget.

Frank has been principal of the school for the past 13 years or the entire school’s history. He submitted his retirement to the school board June 19 and it was approved with “deep regret and sincere appreciation.”

In an interview following his announcement, Frank said he would do whatever the board needs of him to ensure a smooth transition. That has proven to be sticking around a little while longer.

According to a projected timeline for the principal search, the new principal is anticipated to be appointed on Aug. 14 with the successful candidate slated to begin by Oct. 1.

A selection committee — comprised of two Woodland teachers, one non-certified staff member from Woodland, one parent from Beacon Falls and Prospect, an assistant principal from Woodland, one principal and one board member from each town — will oversee the search. Ultimately, the committee will narrow the search down to two or three candidates to be interviewed by the full board.

The district is seeking public input from Beacon Falls and Prospect residents as to the desired qualities and skills they want to have in the next Woodland principal.

Over the next week or so, the district will be collecting feedback through a survey, which is expected to be available online as well as in hard copies in certain locations in the towns. As of this post, the survey was not yet available. Feedback can also be mailed to the district office, 207 New Haven Road, Prospect, CT 06712. For more information, call the district office at (203) 758-6671 or visit www.region16ct.org.

“We’re encouraging people to take an active role in the search process,” James said.
