NAUGATUCK — A former borough resident who gave birth to Waterbury Hospital’s first baby of 1996 died Wednesday after being hit by a car in Colonie, N.Y.

Dawn Wright, 40, of Clifton Park, N.Y., was walking along an entrance ramp to Interstate 87, wearing dark clothes in the rain at about 6 a.m., when she was struck by a 1997 GMC, according to the Albany Times-Union. The driver, Chad Finning, 33, of Loudonville, N.Y., is not expected to face charges, troopers said.

Wright was walking home from a police station, where she had been charged with driving under the influence of drugs and possessing marijuana, when she was hit, troopers said.

Wright’s former husband, 43-year-old Michael Wright of Clifton Park, N.Y., said the couple lived in the borough’s Fox Hill Village condominium complex from 1995 to 1998. Dawn Wright went into labor before midnight on Dec. 31, 1995, and their daughter, Gabrielle Elizabeth, was born 29 seconds after the ball dropped.

Michael Wright said he and Dawn remained close after their divorce in 2004, which gave him custody of their daughter, now 15.

“Obviously, I’m very shocked,” he said of the accident.
