BEACON FALLS — The town is hoping to attract more candidates to fill a vacancy on the Region 16 Board of Education.

Wendy Oliveira resigned from the board, which oversees schools in Beacon Falls and Prospect, last month.

The Board of Selectmen fills a vacancy for elected positions, with the exception of the Region 16 Board of Education, according to town ordinances. A special town meeting will have to be called to fill the position.

First Selectman Christopher Bielik said he put out a call to the Republican and Democratic town committees for nominations. As of Monday only the Republican Town Committee had responded, he said. The committee nominated Michael Krenesky, Bielik said.

Bielik said the town is looking for interested candidates, who are either Democrats or Independents, for the position. Anyone interested can contact Bielik at (203) 729-4340 or CBielik@townofbeaconfalls.com. Bielik requested residents contact him by Dec. 15 because he is hoping to hold the town meeting before Christmas.

Bielik pointed out that Oliveira’s spot is up for election in the November 2015 general election.

“Whoever gets this spot will have it for one year. That might actually be a good thing because if somebody wants to sort of test the waters and see what it’s like to do that for a year and either get encouraged and say, ‘Yes I like this,’ and keep going or, ‘Maybe not so much,’ and can back off,” Bielik said.
